Executive producer Maril Davis live-tweeted Outlander episode 407, “Down the Rabbit Hole,” during the west coast airing on Sunday night. She gave some behind the scenes explanations and details about what happened during this episode. I always appreciate what she adds to the episode besides the video that airs after the episode.
Up for a little live tweeting?? #DowntheRabbitHole @Outlander_STARZ

We had a wee bit of snow on the day we shot the Roger/Fiona stuff. We did shoot a piece where Roger gets spit out of the stones on his first try. Hopefully that scene will be on the DVD extras. #DowntheRabbitHole @Outlander_STARZ

On the advise of our hair/makeup team we had Roger shave as we’ve been told that beards were very unusual in the 1700’s unless you were a mountain man like John Quincy Myers #DowntheRabbitHole @Outlander_STARZ

We decided to use flashbacks of Brianna and Frank during this episode to illustrate the apprehension and guilt Brianna is feeling the closer she gets to (hopefully) meeting her father, Jamie #DowntheRabbitHole @Outlander_STARZ

We liked the idea of seeing Laoghaire in a completely different way. How other people might see her. We imagine (despite the evil side) that she’s a great mom as Marsali and Joanie are certainly terrific #DownTheRabbithole @Outlander_STARZ

Shout out to @nellrosehudson who plays Laoghaire. She did a terrific job this episode! She’s as lovely as can be in real life! 🙂 @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

We found Laoghaire’s house in Culross. The same town where we had Geillis’ house #DownTheRabbithole @Outlander_STARZ

We thought it was interesting to see Joanie and Bree discussing their lives together. Both grew up in households where their parents struggled in their marriage. Obviously, Joanie didn’t spend that long with Jamie but he made an impression @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

Having Frank find the obituary from Jamie and Claire’s death gave us the opportunity to explore some interesting character stuff. If Frank knew for certain that Claire went back to Jamie, what would he do? @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

The ship in this sequence was added after the fact in post production. But the dock and Roger are real! 😉 @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

Yep. Sad but true #EdSpeleers is so good. @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole https://t.co/sn86HXHlyH

And now the Laoghaire we know and love comes out @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole
— Maril Davis (@TallShipProds) December 17, 2018
We felt there was an interesting parallel between Frank & Laoghaire-both loved people (Claire And Jamie) and lost them. Then those people reappeared in their lives and they (thought they) had a second chance. Which didn’t go well as we’ve seen. @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

We thought it would be interesting to see Frank come to Bree the night of his death and ask her to go with him to Cambridge. Not a cool thing for Frank to do obviously. But a last grasp of desperation. #DownTheRabbithole @Outlander_STARZ
— Maril Davis (@TallShipProds) December 17, 2018
We also felt it was heartbreaking that Bree’s last interaction with Frank would be an argument and that she missed the opportunity to tell him she loved him. And how hard that would be to carry that guilt the rest of your life. @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

@SkeltonSophie and @TobiasMenzies were outstanding in the car scene. Heartbreaking @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

The ship interiors we used in this show are from our ship sets from Cape Town. We brought them back with us @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

Had to get Morag McKenzie and Jemmy in there…. 🙂 @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

In original discussions about this episode we had more of a story at Lallybroch w/Bree &Jenny. But @donnellylaura1 wasn’t able to be in the episode and we had to shift the story. We just didn’t feel we could play the same type of story w/out her @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

@RikRankin does a great job in this scene. As does #EdSpeleers. Interesting to see a historian go back in time and see what life was REALLY like. And how brutal it could be @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole

Introducing the lovely @_CaitlinORyan as Lizzie. We loved how she embodied the spirit of Lizzie. She may come across as meek at times but she’s as strong and loyal as they come. @Outlander_STARZ #DownTheRabbithole
